1 to 1 Personal Training

My primary focus at GD Personal Training is to provide excellent barbell instruction ensuring the vast benefits from barbell training whilst preventing injury. Barbell training is the single most useful tool when trying to gain muscle and lose fat. Having been in the industry for 3 years, with a background in sports science, I have learnt a great deal about optimising training for clients from different demographics. The strength and stamina you will gain from proper barbell training will truly change your life. Along with top class coaching, nutrition support will also be provided so you know how to fuel your body appropriately.

Small Group Training

I understand that some people are slightly intimidated by a 1 on 1 scenario, if so, this could be a better option for you. The quality of instruction will remain the same, but when a client rests the other will be performing a set with the barbell. Nutritional advice and meal plans will also be offered to help you achieve your goals.

Strength Training Consulation

I offer a 2 hour consultation service to those who would like to learn the basic barbell lifts. Having shown you how to perform the lifts, I will correct any technical errors I see in technique using my watchful eye. I will also provide advice on how to construct your own training program to ensure maximal gain.

GD personal training

Gareth Drewson holds a BSC Coaching Degree from Cardiff Metropolitan University. He also holds a Reps Level 3 Personal Training , Level 2 gym instructing and Level 2 Olympic weightlifting qualification. He is very passionate about helping others get healthy, lean and strong through barbell training.

Gareth has trained clients from all demographics, from young to old, to those with chronic pain and those who are pain free. He believes everyone can benefit from intelligently programmed weight training to increase muscle mass, reduce body fat along with a whole host of other benefits. All training is conducted via a 1 to 1 or small group training setting. In my experience you can't replicate the quality of service in a large group , hence why I prefer a small, intimate setting where specific guidance can be applied to each client. I will ensure you're doing things correctly from the first lift, allowing you to stay safe while gleaning all the benefits of weight training while staying safe.

Almost all training at GD personal training is comprised of heavy barbell training. The classic lifts of the squat, bench press, deadlift and overhead press will be the foundation of the program. These basic lifts will target the entire body, allowing for a balanced increase in muscle and strength. I will provide appropriate cues to ensure that form doesn't break down and correct technique is used at all times. For clients aiming for fat loss, additional training tools will be used to increase fat burning and metabolism e.g Kettlebells, Slam Balls, Dumbells, Power Bags.

FAQ

Am I too old for this?

No, Older people are actually the demographic that can benefit the most from barbell training. You will improve your day to day life as you will gain muscle and strength, staving off osteoporosis and making you more resistant to injury in the process.

I'm a woman, will I get bulky?

The extra muscle mass you'll gain will increase your metabolism, helping you burn more calories at rest. Your waist will shrink while your arms and thighs will get firmer.

Am I too weak to start?         

We all have to start somewhere. You'll be given an appropriate weight in your first session and slowly build your strength up over time.         

Will barbell training help me lose fat?

Yes. Muscle mass is a metabolic tissue which requires calories just to maintain itself. Combining barbell training, HIIT cardiovascular work and good diet is the best way to lose fat.

I'm carrying a few injuries. Can I still train?

Absolutely, you will be able to glean most of the benefits by using variations of the main lifts. A Carefully thought out program will allow you to train while avoiding exercises that might cause discomfort.
